Why genetic Testing is about more than just your Ancestry...

If you've heard about genetic testing in the past decade, it's probably been through the marketing of ancestry companies. There's the allure of finding out where you came from (or uncovering family secrets!), and at-home kits provided by these companies have shown everyday people how easy it is to test their DNA.

But unfortunately, due to the popularity and widespread marketing of ancestry tests, most people aren't aware of the other benefits genetic testing can provide. While ancestry testing simply tells you where your family came from, genetic testing for health and wellness can lead you to a whole array of actionable insights into optimizing your eating, exercise, lifestyle choices, and more in order to achieve better health.

As we’ve been utilizing genetic testing with our patients at Natural Health Haven LLC,  here are a few ways genetic testing can inform your health and wellness.

  Personalized Care

A lot of approaches to health and wellness these days focus on a one-size-fits-all approach, prescribing the same diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices to everyone. But everyone is unique — so shouldn't healthcare be tailored to that unique individual? Genetic testing uncovers a person's genetic variants, which give us insight into how that person’s cells and systems function, show the impact of the types of food you eat and the environment around you, and more.

  Disease at the Root

In addition to the one-size-fits-all approach to health, many times practitioners are helping their patients simply combat symptoms of chronic illness. But constantly treating symptoms can be timely and costly, and never really addresses the root issues anyway. Since genetic testing reveals how your body works at the cellular level, it can point towards the root causes of illnesses that are generating those symptoms. That way, diseases can be treated at the source.

  Losing Weight

Those who have struggled to lose weight may spend time, energy, and money seeking new ways to get healthy and lose weight when their genes are able to give them all the insight they need. Genes are able to give insight into what types of exercise are best for your body, whether it be more endurance exercises or power exercises. They can also show how your body stores fat, which nutrients it absorbs best to inform which foods to eat, and other insights that can form a more targeted recommendation plan.

  Metabolism

Your genes can also tell you more about your metabolism. We know that metabolism has a connection with energy and vibrancy, yet many of us have a "sluggish" metabolism we're not sure how to correct. Knowing your genes can give you insights into how your metabolism is affected by what you eat, how you burn energy, how you store fat, and more.

  The Right Exercise

What if you've been hitting the gym and trying to get fit, but you've been doing the wrong exercises all this time? Getting insights into your genes can actually show you whether your body is more suited for endurance activities, like running or bicycling, or whether your body is more suited for power activities like sprinting or weight lifting. Knowing more about how your body works means being able to choose the right activities for you.

  Caffeine Intake

We're all affected by caffeine in various ways — some people can drink coffee right up until bedtime, when others have to cut themselves off mid-morning! But do we know why? Our genes can tell us! Our genes are responsible for how quickly we metabolize caffeine, so we can know whether to have that extra cup or not.

  Better Daily Choices

As you can see, knowing your genes and how they affect your body can give you insights into many different aspects of your health and wellness so that you can make better choices each day about actions that affect you. For example, did you know that your genes can determine how well your body eliminates toxins, which can help you make choices about what environments to be in? Your genes can also give you insight into your stress levels, and flag if you're not getting enough sleep at night.

   More Than Ancestry

Knowing your genes can reveal a lot more to you than just what's stated above. Additionally, as our knowledge continues to increase around how genes work and how they impact our bodies, the blueprint that genetic testing provides for your optimal health will only become more detailed, allowing you to build the perfect life of health and wellness suitable to you.

Why are you not healing?

Recently Dr Mark Hyman posted this on his Instagram...

"Most people don't talk about how your spirit, emotional health, your beliefs can actually help determine so much about your health.

Your thoughts, your feelings, your emotions, your beliefs literally communicate with every aspect of your biology, every second."                      ~ Dr Mark Hyman

If you believe and deeply trust that a certain treatment, supplement etc will not help then it won't and if you believe it will, then you are on your way to better health.

The placebo effect is real. Many people do not realize how powerful their minds are and how it basically conditions every aspect of their lives and how they respond to the world.

Our emotions are such an important factor of healing. So many different emotions get stored in the body. Fear in the kidneys, grief in the lungs and pain in the heart. Low self esteem in the gut/stomach area and stress in our adrenals, to mention just a few organ associations. It is vital to deal with trauma when it occurs, to feel all the feelings and investigate the thoughts and beliefs you have and form around events in your life because they become the lens through which you see the world and that shift in energy is what you continue to attract to your world. And you judge everyone and everything from this new viewpoint, that was created by your trauma.  Your perceptions are a mirror of your internal emotions, thoughts and beliefs.

What you believe about yourself, your world and others helps create a world in which that belief system gets validated. You have the power to change your beliefs and your thoughts. It takes effort at first because we have become accustomed to our thoughts running us instead of us running our thoughts and the same goes for our emotions. We also live our lives so attached to our beliefs. They change so much over a lifetime that it seems crazy to become attached to them.

We tend to respond emotionally and thoughtlessly to a lot of the situations in our life without paying attention to the impact it has on our being.

It is time to consider healing your wounds, becoming the master of your mind and truly investigating where your beliefs come from. You may discover that they aren't yours at all (the beliefs, thoughts) but someone else's that you decided to own and live your life as if they are factually yours and real.

There are many modalities available to help you heal your emotions, take charge of your thoughts and shift your beliefs, so that they are more in harmony with your spirit. I invite you to start investigating what may be the best modality to help you become the beautiful, healthy and happy being you deserve. It is your birthright to be abundant, healthy, happy and to share that with the world.

I love meditating and doing my own self healing and energy balancing and I practice mindfulness so that I may find the emotions that are locked in my system as well as the thoughts and beliefs that have formed around them. I do this so that I can heal and be more loving and caring and have more clarity, so that I don't spew my pain all over the world and cause more trauma for anyone else.

You may not be healing a persistent issue due to the fact that you have some underlying emotional trauma or thoughts and beliefs that are prohibiting the total release of energy there. Some people have identified themselves with their diagnosis and/or they may be receiving attention that they desperately seek and desire and therefore they continue to hold unto the ailment. (these are some possibilities)

Many of the reasons why we don't heal are things we don't want to look at or change.

Ask yourself, am I willing to heal, change and let go of that which has brought me to the imbalance, this particular point in my health, or not?

It takes courage to say yes and then act. And it is with courage that we change our lives, our health, our thoughts, our beliefs and eventually our world. Be courageous.

Immunity and metabolism

I love this blog from BIG BOLD HEALTH by Cheryl Kos ND,

And wanted to share it will all of you. Many wonder how the metabolism and Immunity are related. Your daily choices affect your Immune health and wellbeing and if you needed more proof of that, continue reading this concise article…

by Cheryl Kos ND:

Metabolism is all about how your body makes use of food and water, nutrients and air. It’s also about how you deal with toxins from the environment and get rid of waste products.

But while most conversations on the subject are usually limited to things like energy and macronutrients, it turns out that metabolism directly influences the immune system. The process of metabolism is actually one of the major ways our immune cells are educated by the environment, and it plays a significant role in your immune health.

Your Schedule Affects Your Immunity

Like most things in the body, metabolic function works in cycles. Our immune system parallels these cycles, taking advantage of energy when available, and setting up a rest-and-repair schedule for rejuvenating damaged cells during metabolic off-hours. This helps ensure optimal immune function.

The way you arrange your days and nights really affects your metabolism, influencing how your body handles carbs, fats, calories, and all that. Yet your scheduling also impacts how much time is left for optimal immune function, effective healing, running the deep cleaning programs in your cells, and correcting the overactive aging processes most of us experience.

Here is a master key to remember — it’s really hard to heal or rejuvenate when you’re busy digesting sweet, fatty, junky, or highly-processed foods. These kinds of fuel are really distracting for your body, and you can’t have your best immunity or metabolism if you’re eating them very often.

Your body is actually pretty flexible in the scheduling of its peak healing and peak immunity times. But this can only go so far. With every day’s decisions about how you eat and live, you are either helping to promote healthier metabolism and immune function or hurting it, if your choices are not in line with your body’s protective strategy.

How to Harmonize with Your Body’s Clock

Humans have a body clock that is generally set for night-time rejuvenation and day-time duties of protection, activity, and digestion. Keeping this in mind, here are a few ways to harmonize with your highly evolved body clock:

  • Stick to certain meal times as much as possible, avoid snacks, and try to set a limited “eating window” of no more than about 10 hours from your first calorie of the day to your last calorie. (Important note — if you have issues regulating blood sugar, you should speak to your healthcare provider before making these types of changes.)

  • Maintain the same sleeping schedule at least 6 days per week, and ease into restful sleep by turning off devices at least 1 hour before bedtime. Keep your sleeping area cool, quiet, and dark.

  • Emphasize simple, unprocessed foods. One suggestion is to have at least one meal focused on fresh produce (like a meal salad or veggie bowl) and have generous servings of fresh foods.

  • Having a regular mind-body practice — like martial arts, yoga, or meditation — can help you resolve stress better, which can in turn help reduce midnight fridge raids and cravings for metabolically unsound and immune-damaging foods.

  • Enjoy prebiotic and high-fiber foods every day, because they help smooth out energy and mood bumps, and help satisfy the appetite long after you eat them. And they also feed the “friendly flora” in your gut that are so central to good immunity. Examples here include beans, berries, buckwheat, root vegetables, whole grains, and fibrous fruits like apples and pears.

For a Deeper Dive

Here’s a neat Scientific American article that describes how body clocks are set for specific functions at certain times, and how going against your clock with improper eating habits can disturb health. It helps explain why, for better immunity and a healthier response to stress, it may make sense to restrict fatty foods to the earlier part of your day.

PLEASE wake up…Our freedoms are in jeopardy…Former Pfizer VP speaks out.

I would really like for everyone to start looking beyond your fear and start looking at the facts that are staring you in the face.  Anyone that goes against the Media, CDC, WHO, or any government appointed scientific view on social media or media in general is being censored, removed, ridiculed etc. In a true democracy, are we not allowed to speak our views…freedom of speech is in our constitution, yet many Doctors are being removed from Social media platforms. Fact checkers on Facebook are actually just popular opinion and not TRUTH.

There are so many different avenues you can look at for the truth…STOP believing the news you are being spoon fed, like a baby that can’t think for itself, and start using your amazing brain and finding the facts for yourself. Living in fear is what tyranny relies upon. The tyrannical has always used the guise of public safety to implement more and more restrictions and the experiment of how far they can go will continue until we the people wake up and rise up and say NO MORE!

Here is one scientist speaking out on the current agenda. I have researched and read several more truths. DO NOT allow your freedoms to be obliterated by misinformation and FEAR. Do your homework and dig deeper to discover more facts so that you can make an informed decision and not one based solely on FEAR.

(Lifesitenews, ICAN, the Highwire, plus many more will give you more information)

WAKE UP, before it is too late. Just look around at the atrocities happening in other countries. You have a right to chose how to take care of your health and wellbeing and the freedom to go where you desire without restriction. Your health, your choice!

Former Pfizer VP warns of ‘totalitarian’ health tyranny

“The authorities are adopting a method of incremental implementation of vaccine passports, according to Yeadon. “They’ll start with places you probably don’t go, like if you’re my age, you’re probably not going to nightclubs. So, I’m not personally affected by the news that you’ll need a vax pass to demonstrate that you’ve been vaccinated before you can get into a nightclub.”

“But that’s how they do it. It’s like dropping a cancerous cell into your body and you’re not noticing because you’re immunocompromised and it grows and metastasizes and then it kills you,” he continued. “And that’s what these [vax passes] are going to do. So don’t tolerate them anywhere in your country. The system will form itself, and I cannot see a way of removing them.”

“Once these things are in your country and being used to regulate access to essential services like food, money, fuel, trains and things like that, you’ll never get rid of it,” Yeadon said. “We’ve got to stop it beforehand.”

AND some food for though:

“ First, he addressed “the only possible argument” public health entities could advance to support vaccine passports, and this includes the notion that a vaccinated person is “safer to be around,” presuming that the shots “reduced transmission to others.”

In response, the expert in respiratory pharmacology said, “They do not [reduce such transmission]. It’s not in dispute. SAGE [Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies] doesn’t say so. The U.K. government doesn’t say so. So please, you’re not safer standing next to someone in a bar that’s been vaccinated. Not at all. And the government doesn’t say so either.”

Secondly, the COVID-19 gene-based vaccines cannot be about health because if they were, those “who’ve already been infected with the virus [and recovered],” thus having developed natural immunity, “would be excused from such injections.”

“Why would you waste money giving them to someone who already has superior immunity to anything you get from the vaccine? Also, it’s dangerous to vaccinate people who’ve already recovered from the disease in question,” he said.”

6 Must Have Summer Herbs...

This was such amazing information and so easily read and understood that I had to share it with all of you. Now, you can easily add these fabulous herbs to your diet.

6 Must Have Summer Herbs

Basil

Basil is so versatile, and its scent is divine. It is high in Vitamin A and is known to be excellent for eye health and vision, eliminating bad bacteria and viruses in the body, reducing inflammation, and promoting a healthy gut.

From pesto to caprese salads, you’ll want to have this plant front and center on your countertop. Pick its fresh leaves and sprinkle liberally in salads, sauces and even desserts for a sweet and savory contrast.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle has been used for at least 2,000 years to treat arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. It’s most famous as a hair tonic and its other benefits include regulating blood sugar, enhancing circulation, and treating gout and impotence.

Dried stinging nettle leaves can be steeped to make a delicious herbal tea, while its fresh leaves, stems and roots can be cooked and added to soups, stir-frys, and smoothies. The leaves get their ‘sting’ from histamine and formic acid contained in their underleaf hairs. But once cooked, stinging nettle is nothing but tasty.

Mint

Mint smells great, grows fast, and has many healing properties. It’s great for reducing flatulence, masking bad breath, relieving headaches, soothing digestion, and has a calming quality that’s good for heart health.

Having a supply of fresh mint water or tea is a great way to keep cool. The easiest way to enjoy this lovely leaf is to place a handful of fresh mint leaves in a quart pitcher or jar, add spring or distilled water and leave it in the refrigerator overnight for a cold-brewed infusion. Sip, hot or cold throughout the day.

Dill

Similar to mint’s attributes, a warm dill tea treats an upset stomach, is a light aromatic that freshens breath and adds a tasty zing to any dish. Another surprising benefit of dill is its high calcium content and antibacterial properties.

Mix this feathery favorite in with your favorite tuna or chicken salad or use it to garnish grilled asparagus.

Rosemary

Rosemary, fresh or dried, is a pungent, sturdy herb with superb health benefits. Rosemary, high in antioxidants and volatile oils, has long been used for everything such as pain relief, digestion, hair growth, and treating depression.

One of its lesser known benefits is as a memory enhancer. Studies have shown that rosemary boosts memory and helps students recall facts if they smelled the herb while studying, and again while taking their tests.

Use a fresh sprig of rosemary or some essential oil as an herbal cheat sheet during your exam for better recall! Also, while cooking, rosemary goes great with a variety of dishes such as soups, salads, stews, fish, and grains.

Chives

Mild and oniony, chives are a delicious addition to many dishes. They are high in Vitamins A and K. Chives also contain allicin (similar to garlic, onions, leeks), a plant compound that is good for keeping cholesterol levels in check.

The best way to eat chives is to snip them with scissors instead of chopping and add them to garnishes, salads, sandwiches, soups, and sauces just before serving.

Positive thought create healing

Thoughts are Physically Real–They Cause Biological and Physiological Effect

Dr. Larry Dossey, a supporter of mind-body study, explains the fundamental principle behind the surprising effects of placebos: “The body responds to mental input as if it were physically real. Images create bodily changes–just as if the experience were really happening. For example, if you imagine yourself lying on a beach in the sun, you become relaxed, your peripheral blood vessels dilate, and your hands become warm, as in the real thing.”
When you think peaceful and tranquil thoughts, your body–specifically, your leukocytes, adrenal cells and macrophages–will start producing a tranquilizing biochemical similar to Valium. Unlike the drug manufactured by Hoffman-La Roche, which comes with side effects (some potentially serious), the tranquilizing chemical produced by the body has no side effects and supports the proper functioning of the immune system.
Research suggests that thoughts are powerful enough to be perceived as physical objects. Take the findings of Dr. Giuseppe Joseph Calligaris, a 19th century doctor who, in his doctoral thesis, “Thoughts Do Heal,” concluded that a thought leads to actual physical sensations. This mind-body connection manifests in specific organs, which are linked to emotions.
Do you see the connection? Thoughts trigger emotions, which activate organs, which in turn affect our health. Therefore, we hold in our power the ability to transmute our thoughts into positive ones, thereby creating a cascade of endorphins that deliver beneficial healing effects.
Consciously directing one’s mind to think positive thoughts that cause the body to produce health-enhancing biochemicals has been successfully done through biofeedback, guided imagery, meditation, deep breathing and hypnosis. When done right, these practices result in increased longevity, lowered stress levels, a healthy immune system and a reduced risk of heart disease.

Fear and Anxiety

Impact of Fear and Anxiety

Fear is a human emotion that is triggered by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism that signals our bodies to respond to danger with a fight or flight response. As such, it is an essential part of keeping us safe.
However, when people live in constant fear, whether from physical dangers in their environment or threats they perceive, they can become incapacitated.

How fear works

Fear prepares us to react to danger. Once we sense a potential danger, our body releases hormones that:
  • Slow or shut down functions not needed for survival (such as our digestive system)
  • Sharpen functions that might help us survive (such as eyesight). Our heart rate increases, and blood flows to muscles so we can run faster.
Our body also increases the flow of hormones to an area of the brain known as the amygdala to help us focus on the presenting danger and store it in our memory.

Impact of chronic fear

Living under constant threat has serious health consequences.
  1. Physical health.
  2. Fear weakens our immune system and can cause cardiovascular damage, gastrointestinal problems such as ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, and decreased fertility.  It can lead to accelerated ageing and even premature death.
  3. Memory.
  4. Fear can impair formation of long-term memories and cause damage to certain parts of the brain, such as the hippocampus. This can make it even more difficult to regulate fear and can leave a person anxious most of the time. To someone in chronic fear, the world looks scary and their memories confirm that.
  5. Brain processing and reactivity.
  6. Fear can interrupt processes in our brains that allow us to regulate emotions, read non-verbal cues and other information presented to us, reflect before acting, and act ethically. This impacts our thinking and decision-making in negative ways, leaving us susceptible to intense emotions and impulsive reactions. All of these effects can leave us unable to act appropriately.
  7. Mental health.
  8.  Other consequences of long-term fear include fatigue, clinical depression, and PSTD.
So whether threats to our security are real or perceived, they impact our mental and physical wellbeing.

Taking time for me..

This has been an incredible year filled with lots of tears and changes, as well as laughter and travelling.

Why do we always wait for a crisis to make decisions that would have been made a lot easier if we did them in a timely manner?
I love what I do but have been starting to feel burned out and in need of a break. I obviously did not think that I deserved it on some level and did not pay enough attention to it. Finally the Universe (as I call the forces that be) created an opportunity for me to make a choice.
I felt kinda pushed into it and a whole fountain of emotions ensued.

Guilt is such a useless emotion that really does not serve anyone (my opinion). If we act in any manner of our choice, why feel guilty about it?....is it because of the reaction of others?...and are you to be held responsible for that?...
I put those thoughts out there because that was the strongest emotion I felt when I decided to close my office and take time of for me. I felt guilty for abandoning all my clients. For thinking of myself first.

Fortunately for me I do have practitioners that I see for my own care and with their gifts and guidance I have been reminded of the term 'healer heal thyself' and that I deserve to take time for me.

My advice is to take the time you need to care for yourself and to recharge your batteries and be able to come back with more light and energy. This is the best service you can offer anyone else.
It gives everyone around you permission to do the same and to be able to do it without the guilt.

This short sabbatical will allow me to focus on my passion for health and healing of the subtle bodies that make up our whole being. I can read all those books and write to my hearts content and never feel like I have to be somewhere or worry about this one or that one and all their health concerns. I free all of you to take responsibility for your health and to do what you think is right for you, I certainly am and I am proud of it.

Life..

My yogi tea message for the day...

"the beauty of life is to experience yourself"

I am learning to do so on many levels and it is always interesting when we stop and pay attention to our reactions and actions and then take the time to see what the belief system behind it is.
I have found that it is the easiest place to start when choosing to make changes. (my belief systems and where they stem from) I ask myself if this belief still serves me and if it is truly mine or just something I bought into...do I wish to continue it or have my views shifted?

Easiest does not always mean comfortable because some changes are not always comfortable. I am navigating the discomfort and staying mostly on course. There are days where I cannot even find the compass!!!

BUT....for today I choose to just experience myself and see the beauty in me!!
